The Disciple's Prayer
Matthew 6:9-15
(Matthew 6:9–15) “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Prayer reminds us of the Gospel
Prayer helps us to think rightly about God
Prayer is how we invite his rule and reign into our lives
Prayer teaches us to desire His Kingdom purposes

Daniel’s Prayer
Daniel 9:1-19
(Daniel 9:1-3) (1)In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes t (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian kingdom— (2)in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. (3)So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.
DANIEL’S PRAYER WAS GUIDED BY SCRIPTURE
(Daniel 9:4–14) I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:
“Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.
“Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered us because of our unfaithfulness to you. We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you. The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets. All Israel has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you.
“Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster. Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth. The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster on us, for the Lordour God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him.
DANIEL’S PRAYER INCLUDED A FULL AND HUMBLE CONFESSION
Confess = Agree
(Daniel 9:15-19) (15)“Now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for yourself a name that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. (16)Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn to all those around us. (17)“Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary. (18)Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. (19)Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”

(Luke 2:25-38) (25)Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. (26)It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ. (27)Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, (28)Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying (29)"Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. (30)For my eyes have seen your salvation, (31)which you have prepared in the sight of all people, (32)a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." (33)The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him. (34)Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, (35)so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too." (36)There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, (37)and then was a widowuntil she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. (38)Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
(Isaiah 7:14) (14)Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel. (God is with US)
(Psalm 27:14) (14)Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
Isaiah 40:28-31 (28)Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. (29)He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. (30)Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: God is not silent about the reality of waiting but He also is not telling us to be passive, uncaring, unaware... (31)But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
(Psalms 27:11) (11)Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path
(Romans 5:6-8) (6)You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. (7)Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. (8)But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

(Luke 1:5-7) 5In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. 7But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.
(Numbers 6:8) All the days of his separation he is holy to the Lord.
(Luke 1:60-64) 60but his mother answered, "No; he shall be called John." 61And they said to her, "None of your relatives is called by this name." 63And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. 63And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And they all wondered. 64And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.
(Luke 1:68) “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his peopleand has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,
(Luke 1:76-77) And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins,
(Luke 1:78-79) because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
(2 Corinthians 12:9) But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
(Psalm 77:10-12) Then I thought, "To this I will appeal: the years of the right hand of the Most High." I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.

1 Peter 5:1-9 (1)So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed (2)shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; (3)not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. (4)And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. (5)Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." (6)Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, (7)casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. (8)Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (9)Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. (10)And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. (11)To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Isaiah 50:7 “I gave my back to the scourges, and my cheeks to the blows; and I turned not away my face from the shame of spitting: but the Lord God became my helper; therefore I was not ashamed, but I set my face as a solid rock…”
John 21:15-19 (18)Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go." (19)(This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, "Follow me."

(1 John 4:19-21) (19)We love because he first loved us. (20)If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. (21)And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
(I Peter 4:7-11) (7)The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. (8)Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. (9)Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. (10)As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: (11)whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
(I Peter 4:8) (8)Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
(John 13:35) (35)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
(I Peter 4:8-10) (8)Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. (9)Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. (10)As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:
(Proverbs 10:12) (12)Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers over all offenses.
(1 Corinthians 13:4-5) (NLT) (4)Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.
(Matthew 18:21-22) Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.
(I Peter 4:9-10) (9)Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. (10)As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:
(Acts 2:46-47) (46)And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, (47)praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

(1 Peter 2:9) 9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
(Genesis 1:27) 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
(2 Corinthians 5:17-18) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
(1 Corinthians 12:27) Now ye are the body of Christ, and individually members of it.
(1 Peter 2:13-17) 13Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
(1 Peter 2:18-20) 18Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.
(1 Peter 3:1-6) 1Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 5For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
(1 Peter 3:1-6) 7Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
(1 Peter 3:1-6) 8Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.
(Psalm 32:9) 9Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.
(1 Peter 3:10-12) 10For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; 11let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. 12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
(James 1:26) 26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.
(Proverbs 16:2) 2All a man's ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord.
(Proverbs 20:11) 11Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright.
(Philippians 2:3-4) 3Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

(I Peter 2:1-3) 1So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. 2Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
(1 Corinthians 3:1-3) But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh.
(I Peter 2:4-12) 4As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
(Hebrews 10:10) 10And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
(I Peter 1:15-16) 15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

(1 Peter 1:13-14) 13Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance
(1 Peter 1:15-17) 15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile
(1 Peter 1:18-19) 18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
(1 Peter 1:20-21)20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
(1 Peter 1:22-23)22Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
(John 15:12) 22My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
(1 Peter 1:24-25) 24for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
(Isaiah 40:8) 8The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

(1 Peter 1:1-2) 1an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. Born Again to a Living Hope
(1 Peter 1:3-5) 3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
(Romans 3:21-24) 21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
(1 Peter 1:6-7) 6In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire —may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
(1 Peter 1:8-9) 8Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
(John 20:29) 29Jesus said to him (Thomas), “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
(1 Peter 1:10-12) 10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
